Nous sommes fiers d’annoncer le lancement du nouveau projet Portraits d’anglophones de la Haute-Yamaska – 30 figures marquantes de notre histoire. Grâce au soutien du programme SHARE (Supporting Heritage Awareness, Recognition and Engagement) du Réseau du patrimoine anglophone du Québec ainsi qu’au ministère du Patrimoine canadien, cette initiative mettra en lumière des femmes et des hommes qui ont profondément marqué l’histoire de la région.

Jusqu’au début des années 1850, la Haute-Yamaska était majoritairement habitée par une population anglophone. Ces communautés ont joué un rôle déterminant dans le développement du territoire en fondant les premiers noyaux villageois, en créant des entreprises et en contribuant à l’essor industriel, économique et social de la région. Même après être devenus minoritaires, les anglophones ont continué d’exercer, pendant près d’un siècle, une influence importante sur la vie locale. Pourtant, plusieurs de ces parcours demeurent encore peu connus du grand public.

En retraçant le parcours de 30 personnalités ayant marqué l’histoire de la Haute-Yamaska, ce projet contribuera à faire redécouvrir le rôle essentiel joué par la communauté anglophone dans le développement de la région. Destinées au grand public, les biographies offriront également un répertoire de référence sur les familles et les individus d’origine anglophone qui ont vécu en Haute-Yamaska et contribué à son histoire.

NEW PROJECT | The Anglophone Legacy of Haute-Yamaska

We are proud to announce the launch of a new project, The Anglophone Legacy of Haute-Yamaska : 30 Remarkable Figures. Thanks to the support of the SHARE (Supporting Heritage Awareness, Recognition and Engagement) program of the Quebec Anglophone Heritage Network, as well as the support of Canadian Heritage, this initiative will highlight the essencial role of women and men who have profoundly shaped the history of the region.

Until the early 1850s, Haute-Yamaska was predominantly inhabited by an English-speaking population. These communities played a decisive role in the development of the region by founding the first villages, establishing businesses, and contributing to its industrial, economic, and social growth. Even after becoming a minority, English speakers continued to exert a significant influence on local life for nearly a century. Yet many of these stories remain largely unknown to the general public.

By tracing the lives of 30 individuals who left a lasting mark on the history of Haute-Yamaska, this project will help rediscover the essential role played by the English-speaking community in the region’s development. Intended for the general public, these biographies will also serve as a reference resource on English-speaking families and individuals who lived in Haute-Yamaska and contributed to its history.
